America, Sophia

Before my eyes could see over the counters,
Before I could understand the words,
Of the strange man asking questions,
And my mother’s answers.

Before, I understood the boundaries
Before I understood the wars,
As my mother stood bravely,
I watch unknowing:

A new vast land around me,
While at my sides,
Suitcases that weight more than my family,
Dragging on wheels all of our belongings.

And I,
So small and meek,
Had more hope in the American dream,
Then my little heart could possibly carry,
But vast and wide it traveled,
Sparkling out of my eyes,
That single moment,
I stepped on our land,
With nothing more then awe,

But as years passed,
And I watched
I understood behind the stars and stripes.

That waving flag,
Was more than just that,
It was beliefs,
And a constant fight.

Often now,
I cry,
Because Americans,
Are not robotic minds and lies

America,
Is not meant to kneel down,
America was made to fight back.
